Hybrid buses store energy when braking to a stop, and
re-use that energy to get the bus moving again.
This theoretically saves fuel, and wear & tear on the
brakes. Which is a good thing and I have no problem with that.
However, Hybrid buses work best on slower routes, with lots of stopping &
starting, like the #1, #2, #7, etc.
The braking mechanism is actually designed to create an electrical charge that is stored in the buses' batteries for its own clean propulsion.
Unfortunately, some local transit experts have observed that OC Transpo is using many hybrids on routes that are
totally inappropriate for them. i.e. they are being used on long haul transitway routes where their unique technology is not being used properly.
Thus resulting in more fuel usage, and more wear and tear
on these much more expensive buses and their electrical systems.
It's time for a REAL shake-up in the management of OC
Transpo.
They are MISusing OUR taxpayer-funded resources!
